Chettinad Pepper Chicken

Chettinad Pepper Chicken is a classic Indian recipe, from Chettinad (South India )region.Its delicious hot and spicy chicken recipe cooked in aromatic spices . This dish is a great feast for all spice lovers. I was inspired by Vah chef and made it little gravy kind so that it can go well with chapati & rice.

  • Chicken small pieces 500 gms
  • 4 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 tspn mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tspn cumin seeds
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 2 pods of cardamom
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • 1 tspn turmeric powder
  • 1& 1/2  tablespoon red chilly powder
  • 1 tablespoon green chilly chopped
  • 2 medium size onion finely chopped
  • 2 medium size Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon ginger & garlic paste
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • Little Chopped coriander for garnishing
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon crushed pepper (do not use powder)


  • Heat the oil in a large pan.
  • Add mustard seeds then cumin seeds, let it splutter.
  • Add the onions and fru till translucent.
  • Now add turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, curry leaves, and green chilly and saute for a while.
  • Now add tomatoes followed by coriander,cumin ,red chilly powder and salt and mix well.
  • Cover the lid and fry the tomatoes till it oozes oil. (5-7 min)
  • Now add the chicken and mix well, cover again and cook over a low-medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked throughly.
  • When the chicken is almost done, add the ground pepper into the mixture and mix well.
  • Cook for another 2-3 min and garnish with coriander.
