Chikoo’s Prawn Biryani

Extreme cold weather ,flu and my tongue needs something spicy and delicious.So Cooked this royal prawn biryani for yesterday’s dinner and I was satisfied and filled.

  • 5 cups Prawns (de-veined)
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 4 green cardamoms
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 tbsp Coriander seeds
  • 1 tspn Caraway seeds
  • 1 Cup onions,sliced
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp chilly powder
  • 1/2 tspn turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tspn garam masala
  • 20 Cashew nuts soaked in water and ground to a paste
  • 1 cup curd,whipped
  • 2 Tbs lime juice
  • 1/4 cup mint leaves chopped
  • 3 green chillies,slit
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves chopped
  • 1/2 tsp saffron dissolved in 1/2 cup luke warm nilk
  • 5 cup water
  • 1 cup oil
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • Salt to taste


  • Wash and soak the rice for 20 min.
  • Add 1 tbsp of oil and salt and boil for 10 min.
  • In a small muslin cloth tie cinnamon,cardamoms,cloves,coriander seeds,caraway seeds and drop it into boiling rice.
  • Remove from the flame and drain the water.Discard the bag of spices.
  • Heat remaining oil in a pan.Add onions and saute for a min or 2.
  • Add ginger garlic paste mix well.Saute for a min.
  • Add chilli powder,turmeric powder,coriander powder and mix well.
  • Now add cashew paste ,curd and fry till the masala starts oozing oil.
  • Add prawns and sprinkle some garam masala and cook for another 5 min covering the lid.
  • Grease a heavy bottom pot with ghee.
  • Place a layer of half cooked rice followed by a layer of prawn masala,pour little lime juice and chopped min leaves and slit green chillies.
  • Repeat the process and make few alternate layers.
  • On the top layer add the ghee,remaining lime juice,coriander leaves and the saffron milk.
  • Cover the pot and seal the edges with atta dough.
  • Preheat oven at 180c, Place the pot in oven and cook for 20 min.
  • Serve hot with your favorite raita.Ting !!!!
