Gatte ki Sabzi -Version1.1

Gatte ki Sabji is an Indian curry dish originating from Rajasthan (One of the state in the Western part of India). It is a spicy dish of gram flour dumplings (Gatte) cooked in diffrent kinds of gravy (like curd,onion).
There are different versions of this dish. Every household and region has a diffrent way of making it . My version 1.1 is inspired by one of my closest friend’s mom who hail from Betul (Madhya Pradesh ).This is her recipe and its delicious. I hope you guys will like it .



  • For Gatte
  • 1 cup besan (Gram flour)
  • 1 tspn oil
  • 1/2 tspn carom seeds(ajwain)
  • 1/4 tspn turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tspn chilly powder
  • 1/4 garam masala powder
  • Pinch of  Asafoetida
  • 2-3 tbspn curd to make the dough
  • For Puree
  • 1 medium size Onion
  • 5-6 garlic pods
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1 tbsp red chilly powder (Use kashmiri chilly powder )
  • 1 tspn cumin seeds
  • 1 tspn coriander seeds
  • Spices
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cardamom
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1/2 tspn turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander power
  • 1 tspn garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsn curd
  • 2 cups water.


  • Mix all the ingredients of gatte and using curd make a hard dough. Knead well and set aside.
  • Shape the dough into a 1/2 inch diameter roll.
  • In a wide large bowl add 3 cups of water and let it boil, once the water starts to boil, put the roll into the water and let the roll cook for about 10-12 minutes at high flame.
  • Once the gatte  is cooked, remove the gatte  from the water and let it cool down. once cooled, slice the gatte into 1/2 inch pieces.
  • Mix all the ingredients in the ‘Puree ” section and make a smooth paste.
  • In a kadai or pan heat oil and add bay leaves,cardamom,cinnamon,cloves, now add the puree and cook nicely for 4-5 min. in low flame.
  • Add turmeric powder,coriander power & salt and mix well,cook till the masala start oozing oil.
  • Add 2 tbsn curd now ,mix well and cook again for 2-3 min in low flame.
  • Add gatte now and 2 cups of water. let the mixture boils for 4-5 min.
  • Garnish with chopped Coriander.
  • Serve with Rice /Chapati/Paratha.
